A bit upsetting...

After picking up their Daddy, I still found the babies on the other side of the cage from Hammie. I looked it up because I was a bit worried & its completely normal, so that's good. She had two under her apperently & she'd switch off between the two groups. One managed to "swim" its way to mama and she pushed him away =( earlier two were feeding on her & she ran to her wheel and dropped one while the other was hanging from her nipple lol.

A little later in the day I went to check on her & she seemed to have grabbed one that was yelling & screaming so I woke Daddy up and told him she was eating one ( I found one dead by the way & eaten when we had gotten home ) and he went to check & said she was cleaning it. Then a few more screams & she WAS eating him! I couldnt bear to watch, so I didnt but Daddy kept watching and got really upset with Hammie. Which made ME upset because I warned him that it could happen. Its hamster's natural insticts. And they have their reasons to why they eat their babies that we cant see. He told me that she ate the lower part of the baby & its top part of its body was still moving and alive... poor baby... I got really upset at their Daddy and left to talk to my mom.

I came back to talk to Hammie & Flix, and I witnessed Hammie eat the rest of the babie's head. It wasnt as bad as I thought it would be... at least there wasnt blood all over like I thought there would be... all I could think was damn they look kinda stringy when she'd bite into its head and pull. She turned around after a while, which is good cause I think I would have gotten sick.

I'm currently boiling her a egg so if she is eating them because of her lack of protein then the egg will provide her with enough to at least care of the remaining two. I'm not too upset that there's 2/5 babies left, I'm just really glad she's alive & okay. Her babies are adorable, they wiggle and squirm around... and look like their swimming in the bedding on their backs, but they really get far doing that! I'd love to see them grow up & see what they look like, but if they dont make it that far, I wont be mad at her or hate her. I understand her motives. She's still my little princess.

She doesnt seem to be paying much attention to her babies. They feed on her when she's near but when they try to GET near her, she pushes them away. I dont know if shes taking feeding breaks or if she completely rejected them.

I guess all of this is easier for me to take then for their Daddy cause my first hamsters had babies ( unexpected pregnancy, the pet store sexed them wrong I guess ) and out of the 20 that were born, five died everyday & the last two remaining ones that lived & were actually growing fur ( one looked like the mom the other like the dad ) she ate them. I was sad for a long long time. But now after all the research I did, I understand why she did it ( this was about ten years ago by the way ).

I took a picture of her "cleaning" the one she ate, but I dont know if I should post it since its more bad news then good...
